ARTHUR OF OOLUHBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOB T SOLAR-STUBGES MFG. CO., .A COR- I PORATION OF ILLINOIS.
con'rnmm lon can.
To all whom it may concern:
Be'fit known that I, ARTHUR Mumia, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers or Cans, of which the following is a'specification.
My present invention relates to containers or cans, and more particularly to a container especially adapted to ice packedlperishable goods in cartons, my object being the,
provision of a strong, rigid and durable con- 10, one end of which is closed b bers readily associatable with the body in` ,such manner as to subsequently permit of hot galvanizing and to also reinforce the can body in such a way as to serve an additional function in preventing close ,contactl of cartons therein with ,the wall of the body.
To the above end my invention proposes a can or container which may be given various forms and which I have shown of rectangular form in the accompanyingv drawing, forming a part of this specification, and wherein,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the can with the cover in place,
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical section through one side ofthe can,
, Figure 3 is a horizontal section, and 'Figure 4 is an enlarged detail section ,through a portion of one of the reinforcing strips.
Referring now to these figures and particularly to Figuresl 1 and 2 my invention proposes a container including a body and a flanged telescoping cover 11 adapted to close one openY end of the body and preferably having its flange 12 terminating at its free edge in a gripping bead 13' as particularly seen in Flgure 2.
The invention relates more l `particularly however to the construction of t e can body a bottom plate 14 and the opposite ends o which are reinforced by vexternal surrounding reinforcing sti'ips 15 and' 16, each terminating at its inner edge-in a semicylindrical bead 17 opening toward the can body and the free edge of which entends4 slightly beyond the inner surface of the strip as seen by reference to the detail Figure 4 of a portion of the strip 16, thus adapting this slightly elongated free edge 18 of each bead to closely and evenly engage the external surface of the can body 10 particularly in view of the factthat each of the strips is spotwelded as indicated at 19 -to the can body immediately adjacent its bead 17.
The outer edge of the strip around the open end of the can has a reverting flange 20 interengaged within a double flange 21, 22 ofthe can edge so that by pressure the reinforcing strip 15 is thus securely locked in place, the flanges being turned outwardly of the body 10 so that provision is thus made for effective engagement'of the cover with its ange 12 and beaded edge 13 as previously described.
On the other hand the strip 16 at the lower closed end of the body 10 is formed by a reverting extension of the depending flange 23 of the bottom plate 14, the lower edge of the body 10 being received between Ilan 23 and its extension forming the reinforcing strip 16 so that the spot-welding 19 not only holds the reinforcing strip 16 but securely anchors the bottom plate 14 in place.
The body 10 may be bent to form from a single strip of metal with its flanged edges joined in a vertical seam 24 as shown in Figure 3, and is provided therearound with vertically disposed beads 25 which are pressed inwardly so that they not only serve to reinforce that portion of the body between the external reinforcing strips 15 and 16 butvthey also form inwardly presented ribs which serve to prevent close contact by internal packed cartons and the like with the wall of the body. This structure holds the cartons away from the wall of the body and permits air spaces between the cartons and the walls 'of the container.
It is'thus seen that my invention provides a container particularly adapted for the urposes stated, as well as one which may he readily asembled, which is of a simple economical nature, and which will be strong and durable in use, and it is further ob- ,ner in which ,the rexternal reinforcing strips are joined to the body' of ther container and their free beaded edges forced into closeuniform external contact, the completed container in the' assembled. form shown inthe `several ligures is' especially adaptable to hot galvanzring entirely thereover in lorder to avoid subsequent rusting and the `collection ofdirt and moisture tending toward this result. f'
lifclaim:
A container, comprising a body portion9 and. a'bottom portion having an inner anmamie vvout-bent bead, the free edge of which contacts with said body ortion,` said outer ange being permanent y attached to said body portion as by spot-welding, at the jnction'of said bead with said outer ange,`
the opposite edge of said bead being' unattached to the can body.
lLn testimony whereof ll have axed my signature.
a ARTHUR Minnen.
