CONTAINER WITH HINGED COVER Filed Aug. 5', 195a Patented Mar. 26, 1940 UNITED STA ES CONTAINER WITH ,HINGED COVER Edward E. Baker, Mamaroneck, N. Y.,'assignor to Continental Can Company, Inc., New York,
N. Y., a corporation of New York Application August s, 1938, Serial No. 223,365
1 Claim. (01. 220 s1 The present invention relatesto new and useful improvements in containers, and more particularly to improvements in a sheet metal container having a hinged cover.
An object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type, wherein the'hingev connection. between the cover and the body portion is disposed within the body Wall so as to.
permit the application of an external sealing tape over the adjacent edges of the cover and body portion when the container is closed. A further object of the invention is to provide a contain-er of the above type, wherein the cover skirt and the adjacent portion of the body Wall are shaped so as to provide a recess for receiving the sealing tape in order to prevent tearing or accidental removal of the tape. A still further object of the invention is to provide a container of the abovetype, wherein the open end of the body portion is provided with an inward bead which serves as a hinge pintle for a portion of the cover, which cover portion extends through the body wall of the container below the inward bead.
The above and other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will be hereinafte more fully pointed out.
In the accompanying drawing: v
Figure l is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the container with the cover hingedly connected thereto and in a closed position,
the dotted lines showing the cover in a partially" open position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation showing the cover and body portion before being hingedly connected. j
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but show ing the container after the cover and body por tion have been hingedly connected.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the cover in a fully open position. Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, the container is illustrawd as including a body portion ll) having an outward peripheral bead H which is spaced below the open end thereof. The body portion I is provided with an inset portion 42, the edge of which is inwardly curled to provide an inward bead 13 around the open end thereof. At one side of the inset portion 12 of the body, the metal is. cut beneath the bead l3 and bent inwardly of the body portion it], as at M, Ma, in order to provide spaced apertures I5, l5a. I
The cover 56 is provided with a depending skirt or flange I! which has an outward bead the top of the cover. At one side of the cover IS, the flange I! is partially cut away and provided with extensions '5, Mia which arespaced symmetrically with respect to the openings M, 14a, in the inset portion 12 of the body. vThe extended portions l8, l8-a on the cover flange are adapted to be passed through the openings M, Ma respectively, and are thencurled around the bead 13 on the body portion.- Y Thus, the portions of the bead encircled by the extensions 18, ltd afford a hinge pintle by which the cover is hing- .edly connected to the body portion so that the container can be conveniently opened and closed. Opposite the hinge connection between the I611 extending peripherally therearound adjacent cover and the body portion, the inset portion l2 7 on the body is provided with a recess I9. The
cover flange l 1 is provided with a similarly placed inward projection or boss which is adapted to snap into the recess I9 when the cover is closed, as shown in Figure 1.
When the cover is closed, the cover flange I1 and the body portion of the container above'the'j I bead ll present a smooth outer surface due to The bead l6a on the cover and the provide a recess therebetween for receiving a sealing tape 2| which covers the adjacent surfaces j of the cover flange and the body portion for sealing the container. be particularly noted that the hinge connection between the cover and thebody portion is disposed within the body wall of the container so that a smooth surface is afforded for receiving the sealing tape 2|.
When the container is closed and sealed, the
interfitting relationship between the cover flange and the inset portion [2 afiords a smooth surface to which the tape 2| is applied. The tape covers the apertures l5, l5a and also the adjacent edges of the cover flange and body portion. The heads ll, l6a on the body portion and cover, respectively, extend outwardly beyond the top and bot tom edges ,of the tape so as to prevent the tape from being accidentally tornv or otherwise damaged.
When it is desired to open the container, the tape 2| is cut or removed and the cover moved about the bead I3 which serves as a hinge pintle for theextensions l8, Illa on the cover flange.
body portion I!) serve as stops for limiting the In this connection, it is to a outward or opening movement of the cover.
Thus, as indicated in Figure 4, the cover flange abuts against the metal portions I4, open position.
While one form of the invention has been shown and described for purposes of illustration, it is to be clearly understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departingfrom the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
I claim: 1 v
A container comprising a body having-an inset portion around the open end thereof and an out- Ma in its wardperipheral bead slightly below said inset portion on the body wall, said inset portion having an inward bead around the end thereof and an aperture below said inward bead and above the outward bead on the body wall, a portion of the body wall in the region of said aperture extending inwardly below the inward bead onsaid inset portion for providing a stop, a cover having a depending flange adapted to overlie the inset portion on said body for closing the container and providing a substantially smooth exterior surface, said cover having an outward peripheral bead at the top thereof substantially coextensive with the outward bead on said body and the depending flange of said cover having an extension passing through said aperture and encircling the inward beadon said inset portion for hingedly connecting the cover to the body, said depending flange adapted to abut against said stop when the cover is open, and a sealing tape secured over the depending flange on said cover and the adjacent wall of said body and disposed between the outward beads on said cover and said body whereby the sealing tape is protected against accidental tearing.
