[Class 110 (i)] [See also Group XXXV] In a submersible electric motor of the type in which the weight of the rotating parts is partly taken by the pressure of liquid on a relieving plate, against which it is forced by a pump driven by the motor, the liquid acting on the plate is kept separate from the external liquid, and may be caused to circulate as a cooling-liquid. The Figure shows a centrifugal pump 10 forcing liquid against a disc 7 on the shaft 1, so that it escapes between the disc and the pump-casing 12. To prevent binding at starting, or if the pump starts in the wrong direction, a non-return valve may be placed in the pump inlet 16 and the shaft 1 rotate in a footstep bearing which always maintains a small gap between the disc 7 and the casing 12. The liquid may simply circulate in a chamber 15 or some of it may flow by passages 30 and a pump-impeller 29 to the air gap 4 of the motor and thence to chambers 23 outside the chamber 15 cooled by the external liquid, returning to the chamber 15 by a passage 24.
