Pumping - machines; starting, facilitating; cooling parts; centrifugal Sprengel pumps.-An air-pump of the water-ring type is located above the impeller j of a vertical shaft centrifugal pump; the air-pump rotor g is fixed on the centrifugal pump shaft b or on the shaft of a driving motor a directly coupled thereto and is supported on a fixed bearing member v which has a cylindrical portion w surrounding the shaft and extending above the level of the water in the pump casing. The liquid for the air pump is taken from a reservoir o in its casing through a control valve u. Water for a cooling jacket x is supplied by pipe connecting 2, 3 to the suction and delivery sides of the centrifugal pump. The air pump is shown adapted to withdraw air from a separating chamber d, provided with a float valve as described in Specification 170,494, on the inlet side of the centrifugal pump. Leakage from, the lower side of the air pump is prevented by vanes 6 on the under side of the rotor g.
