Abstract

Liquid fuels for internal-combustion engines are improved by adding a mixture of paraldehyde and a polycyclic hydrocarbon, e.g. naphthalene or hydrogenated naphthalene. The mixture may also contain acetaldehyde, acetone, an aromatic amine, e.g. aniline, toluidine, or amino-cymene, and an oleaginous or like material serving as an upper cylinder lubricant. Normally, 1,0 per cent of mixture is added to Diesel fuels, and 0,5 per cent to petrol or to substitutes composed of hydrocarbons and up to 25 per cent of alcohol. Suitable mixtures are: 20--50 litres of paraldehyde with 50--80 litres of tetrahydronaphthalene; and 50 litres of spindle oil with 20 litres of paraldehyde and 30 litres of tetrahydro-naphthalene.
