Abstract

Coloured bituminous emulsions for road-surfacing purposes are made by dispersing a colouring-agent in water and incorporating with this dispersion either bitumen or a bituminous emulsion. The preferred emulsifying agent for both the bitumen and the colouring-agent consists of alkali, resin pitch or resin, and bone fat. According to an example, 20--30 gms. of metallic oxides or of colours having a clay base are dispersed in 60--90 gms. of water containing the said dispersing-agent and 300--400 gms. of an emulsion containing 50--60 per cent of bitumen are added with prolonged stirring. Fillers, such as lamp black, pumice, infusorial earth, &c. may be added.
