Abstract

445,212. Polarizing-apparatus. HOLMES, J. G., 27, Dale End, and ENGLISH. J.. 441. Chester Road, Erdington, both in Birmingham. Nov. 21, 1934, No. 33504. [Class 97 (i)] An apparatus for detecting strains in glassware of the type in which light polarized by a concave reflector is observed through a Nicol prism comprises a cabinet a fitted with a hinged lid b and carrying a concave reflector h on its base, the lid b carrying an eyepiece k containing a Nicol prism i and tint-plate so that, when the lid is open the eyepiece receives light reflected from the mirror, the object to be viewed being placed between the mirror and the eyepiece. The cabinet may contain an inner compartment d fitted with a lamp c, a reflector e, and a transparent screen f so that light from the lamp may reach the eyepiece by reflection from a vertical cylindrical mirror g and mirror h, the lid carrying a switch to switch the lamp on or off when the lid is opened or shut.
