Abstract

Periscopes.-In order to maintain the line of sighting instruments on board vessels and at the same time permitting the eye-piece to move with the vessel, the eye-piece E is mounted in the axis of gyration of the outer frame C<1> of a cardan type suspension, while the remainder of the instrument is carried by the inner frame C<2> provided with a weight or gyroscope G. The outer frame C<1> turns in bearings H fixed in relation to the vessel. The rays received by the sighting instrument F are reflected into the eyepiece by a pivoted reflector J and is kept automatically at right-angles to the bisector of the angle between the sighting-instrument F and the eye-piece E by means of a rod K provided with a sleeve L connected by links to the inner frame C<1> and the axis c<1> of the outer frame C<1>.
