[Class 97 (iii)] The beam 5 of an E÷tv÷s torsion balance is supported by the member 3 carrying the index mirror 2 so as to be rotatable about an axis substantially coinciding with the main axis of inertia 4 passing through the weights 10, 11. In the form shown, the hollow beam 5 is obliquely suspended from a parallel bar 6 secured to the member 3 by two threads 7, 8, fastened to the beam at the axis 4 by interior clamping mechanism 9. 1 is the torsion thread. In a modification the member 3 may be provided with a rigid axis on which the beam 5 is suspended by pin bearings.
