Abstract
450,489. Mariners' compasses. CHAD. BURN'S (SHIP) TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and BAMFORD, A. C., Cyprus Road, Bootle, Lancashire. March 20, 1935, No. 8650. [Class 97 (ii)] A compass 10 supported by gimbals 11 in an elevated position, e.g. the roof of a ship's wheelhouse, is provided with an optical arrangement, e.g. the mirror 17, which is fixed to the compass 10 by telescopic connecting means 15 so as to swing therewith and enables the compass to be read from a remote position. The mirror 17. may be adjustable about a vertical axis as well as about the horizontal axis 18, 18. Lateral inversion of the compass card image may be eliminated by providing a lens system or by having laterally inverted readings on the compass card. A sighting device 21 for taking bearings may be carried by a telescopic rod 25 which is detachably secured by a bayonet joint to a socket 22 carrying a pointer 20 and rotatably mounted in the centre of the glass bottom of the compass bowl.
