Abstract
384,847. Mariners' compasses. PAXTON, G., 195, Great Portland Street, London. Feb. 19, 1932, No. 5013. [Class 97 (ii).] An optical device for use in reading compasses. comprises a prism arranged to refract light from the compass card in a direction away from the observer and a mirror inclined to reflect the refracted light towards the observer. In the form shown a tubular ring 12 is attached to the compass pedestal and surrounds the gimbal mounted bowl 10. Rotatably mounted on the ring 12 is a bell-shaped cover 14 having a window 15, a housing for a lamp and a hood 17 in which are mounted a prism 26 and a mirror 20 angularly adjustable by means of the knob 22. The hood 17 is also provided with a protecting window 18 and sighting devices 32, 33. The prism 26 may be provided with a lens surface.
