Abstract

445,310. Azimuth fitting. GREEN, B. M., 900, New York Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. Nov. 15. 1934, No. 32869. [Classes 97 (i) and 97 (ii)] An azimuth fitting for a compass comprises a support carried on the compass and rotatable about the axis of the compass, and carrying a pair of prisms mounted close together on the side of the support remote from the observer, one prism being pivoted about a horizontal axis and arranged to give a reflected image of the sighted object, and the other arranged to give an erect reflected image of the compass graduations in the line of sight extending diametrically across the compass. The prism housing mounted on the ring C which is rotatably held on the compass A by flange C<1> comprises two side plates E<1> between which the erecting reflecting prism G is mounted and which carry a foresight K hinged at K', the back sight D being mounted on the opposite side of ring C and hinged at D<1>. Prism G, which rests against a back-plate E<2>, may be a symmetrical foresided prism having an angle of approximately 135‹ at its apex, angles of approximately 45‹ at the ends of its base and the remaining angles each approximately 157¢‹, and is arranged so that a vertical ray of light impinging on the horizontal surface G<3> emerges from the surface G<2> in an approximately horizontal direction after reflection successively at surfaces G<1>, G<5> G<4>, G<1>, these surfaces being inclined to the horizontal at angles of approximately 45‹, 22¢‹, 67¢‹ and 45‹ respectively. A level N is held adjacent the surface G' by brackets N<1> and is observed in the same field of view as the compass graduations. The image of the object to be observed is brought into coincidence with the image of the graduations by the reflecting prism F carried on a frame J rotatable on horizontal spindles J<1> by milled heads J<6>, the axis of rotation passing through the upper end of prism G. Transparent colour screens L, M attached to arms L<1>, M<1> pivoted on the sides E<1> can be rotated into the light beam from the object to prevent dazzling of the observer. The sights K and D may be fitted with suitable detachable magnifying lenses, and an adjustable cover is provided for the apparatus.
