Abstract

774,437. Surveyor's levels. ZEISSSTIFTUNG, C., [trading as ZEISS, C. (Firm of)]. Feb. 4, 1955 [Feb. 20, 1954], No. 3297/55. Classes 97(1) and 97(2) Tq assist in the measurement of the intercept of a measuring staff used in a surveyor's level the latter has arranged in front of it optical elements having a wedge effect and adapted to deflect the line of sight of the level by any suitable angle in the vertical direction. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to a level having a pendulously suspended reflecting prism 42 arranged to maintain the line of sight horizontal when the instrument is tilted. Before the objective 31 are two prisms mounted in bearings 11 and 12 and simultaneously rotatable through equal angles in opposite directions by a gear 13 operated by a knob 15, such rotations changing the line of sight in the vertical plane. The member 2 carrying the prisms is rotatable through 180 degrees about the optical axis on a member 3 supported by the casing 30 of the level so that the line of sight can be changed from a certain angle upwards to the same angle downwards. The field of view of the eyepiece 32 is shown in Fig. 4, 22, 23, 24 and 25 being stadia lines on the graticule 35 (Fig. 1) of the instrument and 22<SP>1</SP>, 23<SP>1</SP> the images of marks on a distant measuring staff framed by the level. Rotation of the prisms 8 enables. the images 22<SP>1</SP>, 23<SP>1</SP> to be moved relative to the stadia lines until one of the latter coincides with a wholenumber mark on the image then the intercept of the image by the stadia lines may be read more easily.
