Abstract

725,862. Artificial horizons ; levels. KOLLSMAN INSTRUMENT CORPORATION. April 23, 1953 [Dec. 10, 1952], No. 11254/53. Class 97 (2). A horizontal reference is provided by means of an illuminated slit 16, the light rays passing through a liquid 20 and being reflected from the surface of the concave mirror 21 which forms a chamber for the liquid, and forming an image of the slit in the plane AB by reflection from the pellicle 12. The instrument itself is levelled by making the image coincide with a mark in the plane AB. For use in a sextant or for levelling an external object, a sighting system is provided comprising an objective 11 and an eye-piece 13. An image of the object (reflected from a rotatable mirror on the axis of the optical system in the case of a sextant) is formed in the plane AB and the object adjusted (or mirror rotated) until its image coincides with that of the slit. A trap 30 is provided to prevent loss of liquid should the instrument become inverted.
