869,617. Optical reflection instrument; levels. DE FONTGUYON, M. P. P. April 18, 1958 [April 19, 1957], No. 12433/58. Classes 97(1) and 97(2) An optical device with a reflecting surface, for attachment to an optical observation instrument comprises, in the path of the light beam, a deformable transparent medium forming a prism of variable angle, one face of which is bounded in part by the instrument, said prism consisting of a material of a predetermined refractive index so that variation of angle between the emergent beam and the reflecting surface caused by angular displacements of the instrument relative to the reflecting surface may be amplified, reduced or cancelled as desired. In the automatic level shown in Fig. 2 an image of a reticule 38 is formed in the principal plane 37 of the objective eye-piece system 35, 36. Light from the reticule 38 passes through a deformable prism formed by a fluid 32 and bounded by a reflecting mercury bath 30 at which the light is reflected and a plate 31. The instrument can be reduced in size by having the surface of the plate 31 (64) which bounds the prism bent as at 68, 69 in Fig. 6. In another embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the size of the instrument is decreased by placing multiple additional transparent media in the light path.
