869,627. Optical testing apparatus. CARL ZEISS JENA, VEB. Nov. 4,1957, No. 34370/57. Class 97(1) An apparatus for testing alignment and direction comprises a colimating mark 5 which is illuminated by a lamp 3 and disposed in the focal plane of an objective 8 so that parallel rays are incident on a mirror 2 attached, for example, to a shaft 1 whose alignment and direction are to be tested. The light rays from the mark 5 are returned by the mirror 2 and'an image is formed in the focal plane of a telescope eyepiece 10, a reticule 11 being provided in this plane. If the shaft 1 is inclined to the telescope axis the image of the mark 5 will be displaced from the zero position on reticule 11, such displacement being a measure of the inclination of the shaft axis. In order to test alignment, the mirror 2 is provided with at least one mark or a reticule and by displacing the dispersive lens 7 this mark is focused on the reticule 11, the lamp 3 being switched off during this operation. The position of the image of the mirror mark on the reticule 11 is an indication of the amount of misalignment which may be measured by disposing in the light path two adjustable plane parallel glass plates.
