Abstract
205,445. CÚsar, J. April 28, 1923. Clinometers.-In a pendulum clinometer comprising a rectangular base frame a in which is rotatably mounted a shaft d diametral to a graduated arc e suspended on it, and a pendulum index ,arm h<1>, suspended from the shaft, indicates the longitudinal inclination on the arc which itself moves over a second arc j fixed to the frame a to indicate the lateral inclination, an additional index q<1> is geared to the arm h<1> to indicate the longitudinal inclination on an arc r secured transversely to the shaft d. By this arrangement the two inclinations can be read simultaneously. The arm h<1> is secured to a shaft g which is rotatably mounted transversely in the shaft d and carries a similar arm h<2> at the opposite side of the arc e to balance the arm h<1>. A bevel gear p<1> on the shaft g engages a bevel gear p<2> loose on the shaft d and secured to a counterweighted arc q carrying the index q<1>, and the gear p' is balanced by a blank cone p<3> at the other end of the shaft g- The arc e carries sights l<1>, l<2> and the arcs q, r are so arranged as not to obstruct the line of sight. The shaft g may be locked in the reading- position by pressing against it a rod n which is mounted axially in the shaft d and is normally held out of engagement with the shaft g by a spring. The arcs j, r, and q may be adapted to swivel into line with the frame a to enable the instrument to be carried in the pocket.
