Abstract

444,075. Escalators. STAHL AKT.- GES., R., 231, Ulmerstrasse, Stuttgart, Germany. Sept. 18, 1934, Nos. 26851 and 26852. Convention dates, Sept. 20, 1933 and Aug. 18, 1934. [Class 78 (i)] The steps 2 of an escalator are formed as quadrilateral members having the supporting rollers 1 in a plane parallel to the tread and traversing parallel tracks for the inclined portion and a common track for the horizontal portion of travel. At least one of the rollers 1 is beneath the tread and the driving chain 4 is secured to the rear spindle. Fixed guides around the turning points of the escalator are omitted and the turning of the steps is effected by means carried by the moving part of the escalator. In the form shown the turning is effected by the engagement of stops 7 secured to the chain with members 6 secured to the front roller spindles. One or two driving chains may be used and the arrangement permits the positioning of the motor 15 and transmission to the upper chain wheel 13 within the space enclosed by the upper and lower tracks 11, 12. The spindles 19 of the rear supporting rollers are slidingly mounted in the links of the driving chains, as shown in Fig. 9, and in order to relieve the pressure on the spindles at the points of transition from the inclined portion to the horizontal portion of the escalator, counterpressure rollers 20 are provided against which the driving chains bear. These rollers may form part of the chain driving gear and may be milled and formed of mouldable composition.
