Abstract
443,171. Discharge apparatus. M-O VALVE CO., Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, London, and GOSSLING, B. S., c /o General Electric Co., Ltd., Wembley, Middlesex. Nov. 7, 1934, No. 32011. [Class 39 (i)] In a high-tension device having one electrode from which an autoelectronic discharge may start, the electrodes are so shaped and arranged that no normal to the surface of this electrode from a point at which an auto-electronic discharge may start cuts any insulating part of the device without previously cutting an electrode. In one form, a rectifier operating at 100,000 volts has a mercury vapour filling at a pressure corresponding to atmospheric temperature, and comprises an anode 2 forming part of the envelope, a cathode 1 and a shield 3 connected to the cathode. The corners of the anode 2, from which an auto-electronic discharge may start, are rounded so that normals to the anode cut the shield 3 before cutting the glass parts 5, 6. In a modification, the corners of the anode 2 are made re-entrant so as to reduce the field at these parts. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 402,691.
