Abstract
443,018. Directive aerials. PERCIVAL, W. S., 6, York Mansions, York Avenue, Hanwell, Middlesex. July 19, 1934, No. 21185. [Class 40 (v)] In a directive shortwave system, the lateral members 3, 4, Fig. 1, connecting the parallel feed - line transformer 6, 7 to the more widelyspaced aerial wires 1, 2, are arranged to develop current-nodes at the points 11, 12, so that undesired radiation from the wires 3, 4 is substantially balanced out. In order to secure a more favourable impedance matching, the conductors 3, 4 may be connected at intermediate points 15, 16 along the aerial wires, as shown in Fig. 2. This reduces the overall selectivity of the aerial, and so minimizes side-band cutting, particularly in television. The field-distribution may be varied from a figure-of-eight to a cardioid curve by altering the relative lengths of the aerial elements. In Fig. 1 the feed-wire is terminated by a quarter-wave auxiliary conductor 17 to reduce the currentflow along the outer surface of the sheath 8.
