Abstract

517,342. Aerials. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. July 25, 1938, No. 21984. Convention date, July 24, 1937. [Class 40 (v)] A short-wave television aerial comprises a number of parallel conductors spaced apart by a small fraction of the operating wavelength, one free end being connected to the transmission line and the other being left open, or also connected to the line without the use of a terminating impedance. The arrangement presents a flat impedance over a wide range of frequencies without the use of a matching transformer. As shown in Fig. 1, the aerial consists of a closely-spaced pair of half-wave wires A, B connected together at both ends, the transmission line being directly coupled to a centre break in the wire B. The current distribution in each wire is shown in dotted lines, and is additive for the pair. For a given current, the radiation resistance of the two wires in parallel is four times that of a single dipole, thus giving the broad resonance and impedance characteristics required in television. Wires 3/4 or 5/4 of a wave in length can be used to present a higher impedance. The wire A may be broken in the centre, and the gap bridged by a quarter-wave loop. As shown in Fig. 8 three wires are used to give nine times the radiation resistance of a single dipole ; whilst the four-wire arrangement of Fig. 11 gives a 16 : 1 ratio. Fig. 14 shows an aerial assembly corresponding to Fig. 8. Specifications 424,698, and 438,326, are referred to. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also an aerial in which a centre gap is bridged by a resistance ; this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
