Abstract
442,817. Magnetic compasses. JOHNSON, C. H., Linwood Works, Linwood, near Paisley. May 7, 1935, No. 13405. [Class 97 (ii)] The bowl 1 of a liquid compass is housed within a two-part clamp including a lower clamp tube 2 and an upper clamp tube 3. The clamp tubes are provided with out-turned flanges 4, 5 by means of which they are clamped together. An inturned flange 7 on the tube 3 secures the cover glass 8 and an inturned flange 6 on the tube 2 clamps a flexible diaphragm 11 against the margin 13 of the conical bottom 14 of the bowl. A flexible diaphragm 16 spaced above the diaphragm 11 forms a sealed air chamber 20 and an expansion chamber 17 communicating with the interior of the bowl through ports 18. A ring 27 rotatably mounted on the top of the tube 3 is provided with a pair of spaced parallel wires 30 and may be locked after setting by screw 33. The magnet 39 and indicating needle NS are carried by a dome 35 cut away locally at 38 to preserve the diametral continuity of the needle. The bowl is supported within a binnacle 21 by lozenge-shaped spongerubber pads 22 interposed between the flanges 4, 5, and a shelf 23 on the binnacle.
