Abstract
1,233.235. Surgical suction apparatus. NIC INSTRUMENTS Ltd. AND LEAR EMBALMING Ltd. 24 Oct., 1969 [13 Nov., 1968], No. 53857/68. Heading A5R. [Also in Division F2]. In a container and valve assembly 12 and 14 respectively, which is designed for use in draining body liquids during surgical operations, flow of the body liquids into the container 12 takes place via tubes 17 and 16 as a result of suction being applied to the container interior via the valve 14 and the tube 3, withdrawal of gas from the container taking place through passages 15 and 4 of the valve 14. Upon the foam or bubbles on the rising surface of the liquid in the container, or the rising liquid surface itself, entering a passage 11 and hence touching a diaphragm 9 of the valve 14, the diaphragm rises to engage an upstanding seat 6 formed at the end of passage 4 and thereafter is retained in engagement with the seat by the suction applied to tube 3. With the above arrangement, and particularly the disposition of passages 11 and 15 relative to the rising liquid surface, the entry of either liquid or foam into suction passage 3 is at all times inhibited. The valve diaphragm 9 is preferably formed of a rubber membrane secured between two annular washers 10. The valve is said to be disposable.
