Abstract
680,130. Sphygmographs. ZENATTI, E. A. Oct. 11, 1949 [Oct. 27, 1948], No. 26100/49. Class 81 (ii). The blood pressure of the blood vessels of the eyeball is measured by subjecting the interior of the eyeball to such a pressure that the blood vessels will just flatten during the diastolic period the pulsations of the blood flowing through the vessels being then observed by means of a manometer or dynamometer or the like. As shown an air pressure chamber 12 is attached to the cornea 14 of an eyeball by a suction cup 5. Air from the bulb 16 is forced into the chamber through the tube 15 the valve 18 being open and the required pressure being measured on the manometer 19. Valve 18 is closed and pulsations of the blood vessels cause, via the diaphragm 13 and chamber 12, oscillations of the liquid column inside the tube 17. In a modification the suction cup is formed by a torus shaped annular member 20, Fig. 6, the chamber 12 being sealed by the actual wall of the cornea. In a modification with a suction cup as in Fig. 4 a diaphragm within the chamber 12 actuates a pointer moving over a scale also in the chamber. The chamber 12 may be formed independent of the suction cap or the chamber may be filled with liquid and be connected to the air pump via a liquid filled transparent vertical tube wherein may be observed the oscillations of the liquid column.
