Abstract

437,062. Magnetic compasses. STAIG, D., 260, Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills, Victoria, Australia. Aug. 21, 1934, No. 24068. [Class 97 (ii)] In a liquid magnetic compass, an openended conduit leads from the bowl into the interior of an air-tight chamber containing gas and a small amount of liquid, the gas being adapted to expand or contract to compensate for volume changes of the liquid in the bowl. As shown the conduit 19 terminates in a liquid-filled sump 22 at the bottom of the cylindrical chamber 13, which is secured tangentially to the compass bowl 3 below the level of the glass top 7.
