Abstract

492,563. Measuring rate of change of pressure. ARCHBALD, R. H. Oct. 28, 1937, Nos. 29515 and 36271. [Class 106 (ii)] A rate-of-climb indicator for aircraft comprises a hermetically sealed casing in which is a pressure chamber constituted by a dished back plate having a diaphragm secured over its concavity, fluid pressure being admitted through an opening in the back plate, and the diaphragm or the back plate or both being formed with one or more bleedholes giving restricted fluid passage to the casing. The back plate 10 is secured to a nipple 17 connected to the usual Pitot tube. The diaphragm 11 in the form shown is provided with a bleedhole 32 drilled in a sapphire held by a collet. A front plate 12 limits the extent to which the diaphragm can move and is provided with pillars 13 supporting a mounting 75 carrying the usual instrument movement operated by a push rod 22 passing through an opening 23. The diaphragm may have several bleedholes and bleedholes may be formed in the back plate. A button 34 of magnetized steel is placed on the zero mark of the dial 21 and serves to clamp oscillations about the zero of the steel indicating needle or the steel whisker on a non-magnetic needle. The leak may be varied by means controlled by the pilot or automatically from the instrument movement. The diaphragm may be made of one material, say nickel or German silver, while front and back plates may be made for instance of brass to compensate for temperature variation. Specification 388,514 is referred to.
