Abstract
442,747. Converting. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and DUNHAM, C. R., c/o General Electric Co., Ltd., Wembley, Middlesex. Aug. 20, 1934, No. 23973. [Class 38 (ii)] [See also Group XL] In an arrangement employing a discharge device and in which the anode potential during conduction of the device remains substantially constant, to effect extinction of the device a momentary impulse of negative potential is suddenly applied to the control grid. During the period when the valve 1, Fig. 1, is conducting due to a positive impulse applied to the grid from a source not shown, the condenser 11 is charging substantially to the line potential. To effect extinction the switch 12 is closed, the charged condenser being thereby connected between the grid and cathode of the valve to apply a large negative bias to the grid. In a modification of this, the switch 12 is replaced by a grid-controlled valve. Fig. 3 shows an inverter in which the negative extinguishing bias for the grids is obtained from condensers 28, 29 cross-connected between the anodes and grids of the discharge devices 21, 22, the grids being connected to the cathodes through resistances and a grid bias battery. Here the negative bias is applied (e.g.) to the grid of valve 21 from the condenser 29 when the valve 22 conducts.
