Abstract

442,574. Gas producers. FAUSER, G., 5, Via Barazzuolo, Novara, Italy. Feb. 2, 1935, No. 3453. Convention date, Feb. 2, 1934. [Class 55 (i)] A mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen suitable for the synthesis of ammonia is obtained by the continuous gasification of carbon under a pressure of, for example, from 10 to 20 atmospheres with air or air and oxygen together with an excess of steam, i.e. more than 10 volumes of steam per volume of oxygen, and at a temperature between 650 and 800‹ C. The air and oxygen is supplied under pressure through pipe 1 and is moistened in a saturator 2 by a hot water spray 3, steam is added by a pipe 4, and the mixture is heated in a heatexchanger 5 before passing through a rotary grate 6 into the fuel. The hot gases generated pass downwardly through tubes in the heatexchanger 5, and upwardly around a coiled pipe 7 used to preheat the water, escaping through an outlet 8. To regulate the reaction temperature, some of the steam-air-oxygen mixture used may be byepassed by a pipe 16 direct to the fuel bed. The warm condensate from the water coils is supplied by a pump 12 to the spray 3. If the oxygen content of the gases supplied is insufficient the heating of the producer may be assisted electrically.
