[Class 146 (i)] In a binder for periodicals or the like of the kind having a stiff middle portion or back hinged to two covers and serving to support the papers to be bound, the back, or one or more rigid or substantially rigid members attached thereto, are provided with slots through which the ends of double-ended wire staples attached to the periodicals are passed, and the ends of the staples are bent outward in opposite directions behind the slots. The rigid back 1, Fig. 1, is hinged to covers 2, and has secured to it, between stiffening members 3 or in recesses in the back itself, plates 5 to which are hinged plates 7, slotted at 8 and adapted to be looked in position by pins 9 engaging sleeves 10, 11. Two legs 12, Fig. 3, of a wire staple are passed outwards through the fold of a magazine or the like, and then through the slot 8, and folded back against the inner face of the plate 7, which is then locked in position, thus gripping the legs 12 between the plates 5 and 7. Alternatively, the plates 5 may be omitted and the slots 8 may be arranged at suitable intervals in one long plate. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the back 1 is itself slotted at 8 and is hinged to one cover 2 at 14 and secured to the other cover by means of a flap 15 passing into a pocket 16. Plates 17 are hinged to the back of the back 1, opposite slots 8, and are secured to the back by pins 9 and sleeves 18, 19. Alternatively, the pin 9 may also be used to secure the back 1 to the second cover 2, and the plates 12 may be replaced by a single long plate.
