Abstract

440,724. Reversing-gearing. BARRE, M., 63, Soho Hill, Birmingham. July 4, 1934, No. 19697. [Class 80 (ii)] Reversing-gearing arranged within a belt or like pulley 24 comprises a bevel gear 5 secured to the shaft 9, a loose bevel gear 6, bevel pinions 8 in constant mesh with the gears 5, 6, and carried by a stationary disc 7, and a clutch member carried by the pulley and engageable selectively with the gears 5, 6. The pinions 8 are mounted in apertures in the disc 7 on radial pins 16 which are supported at both ends. The disc is formed with a sleeve 12 which forms a bearing for the shaft 9 and which is secured within a pedestal 14, the gear 6 being journaled on the sleeve 12. The pulley is journaled on the sleeve 12 and on the hub of the gear 5 through ball bearings. As shown, the clutch member 26 is slidably mounted in the pulley, is controlled by a fork -operated sleeve 35, and is provided with end projections 30, 31 engageable with peripheral teeth 32, 33 on the gears 5, 6, these teeth being chamfered to facilitate engagement. Alternatively, friction clutches may be used. By mounting two interconnected pinions on each pin 16, the arrangement may be modified to give a reverse drive of different ratio.
