[Class 52 (ii)] Comprises a hospital bed or invalid couch in which one or both of the end portions are slidable longitudinally and are hinged or flexibly connected to a centre portion which may be lowered by an operating device without altering the positions of the end portions other than a slight longitudinal movement. The mattress carried on the bedstead frame 1, Fig. 1, is in four portions 4, 5, 6 and 7 hinged together at 8, 9 and 14, the hinge 8 projecting at each side to engage sockets 10 on the bed frame 1. The part 5 has rollers 11 so that it can slide on the frame, and the parts 6, 7 are narrower than the frame. The shape of the bed is determined by a lever 15 attached to the part 6 and having a slotted link 17 and clamp 18. Raising the lever causes the centre part of the bed to be lowered to form a V-section, the part 8 sliding. If it is desired at the same time to raise the pillow part 4 the link 20 is kept engaged. If this is disconnected the part 4 remains horizontal. Fig. 3 shows a modification for a bed having a spring net 22 stretched by springs 28 between cross-bars 27 of the bed frame. At the ends the net is attached to rails 29 slidably mounted on the bed frame, and in the centre the net is free and is attached by links 34 to a U-shape frame 30 pivoted at 32 to the bed frame by means of which the net may be pulled into the position shown dotted. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the modification shown in Fig. 5 (Cancelled) in which the fronthalf of the net is attached to a pivoted frame 37 which can be tilted so as to alter the angle of the front part of the bed and also give the centre depression. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
