Be it known that I, THOMAS F. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed-Davenpo'rts, of which the following is a specification. g
The primary object of my invention is to provide an improved davenport-bed to the end that the upholstered back of the davenport may be readily displaced in order that the folded bed-portion of the same may be come accessible. These improvements are particularly applicable to davenport-beds in which the mattress and the supporting frame for the same are foldable into the back portion of the davenport and are normallyconcealed from view by the upholstered back thereof. In the patents t William J. Kelly 1,223,798 dated April 24, 1917 and 1,270,839 dated July 2, 1918 struc tures of this general type are shown, but it will be noted that in these patents the upholstered back of the davenport or sofa is pivotally connected to a truss bar of the mattress supporting frame so that when the bed is in extended position the said back portion depends from the truss bar in such manner as to help support the bed.
According to my invention, however, the back portion of the davenport does not move with the sectional mattress support but moves independently thereof in order that the mattress may be readily accessible when in folded position and as readily rethe position assumed by the back when the bed is folded.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the davenport showing the back portion in raised position.
and the bed in'folded position.
The supporting frame of the davenportbed is designated enerally by the numeral 10 and includes en frame members 11 connected by the upholstered seat section 12. The folding bed portion of the davenport Specification of Letters Patent.-
Patented June 14;, 1921.
maybe designated as 'a whole by the numeral '13 and is conventionally shown as consisting of a 'foldable mattress and a frame 15 consisting of a'plurality of sections pivotally secured together, said sectionshaving supporting legs 16, 17 pivotally secured'thereto. As described in the pat ents above referred to',;the bed part of the davenport is foldable intoaspace 18 in the rear of the said cushion 12. A truss bar 19 is connected to an opposite pair of sections ofthemattress supporting frame in order to add rigidity tothe same and as explained in Patent 1,223,798, above mentioned, this truss bar may have interposed between it and the wovenwire fabric of the mattress spring a series of spiral springs for'the pur pose of providing an additional support for the mattress.
tends upwardly as shown in Fig. 3 and is secured in position by means of a spring pressed clip 20 consisting of a body portion 21 secured to the back 22 of the frame 10 and a spring-pressed locking element 23 pivoted to the body 21.
The frame 10 is provided with the usual arm rests 24 from which standards 25 extend upwardly, said standards being connected at their upper ends by means of the cross piece 26 and angle braces 14 secured to the standards and the cross piece. The
back portion of the davenport consists of a substantially rectangular rame 27, slightly curved at its upper end as indicated at 28, which frame is covered with the usual upholstering 29. According to my invention the upholstered back ishinged near each end to the cross piece 26 by means of angle plates 30 having one side fastened to said cross piece and to the outstanding side of the angle plate an arm 31 is pivotally connected by means of a pin 32. A metallic plate 33 is secured to the end members 27 of the rectangular frame 27 by means of screws 34 and the free end of the arm 31 is pivotally connected to said plate at an intermediate point by means of a pin 35. A link 36 having a slot 37 therein is pivotally connected to one end of the, plate 33 by means of a pin 38 and is slidably connected to the arm 31 by means of a pin 39 engaging in the slot 37 With this hinged construcf'fWjhen the mattress and "its supporting frame are'in foldedposition in the rear portion of the davenportthe truss bar 19extion, in orderto gain accessto the folded bed it is only necessary to raise the back of the davenprt in 'which case the back will pivot about the pins 32 and the link 36 will move relatively to the pin 39 until said pin is located at one end of the slot 37 "in'which position the curved end of the upholstered" back rests against theback of thefrarne and its weight is so disposed that the same tends to remain in this position with stahility so that there is no danger of the back accidentally closing;- With the back in the raised position it isevident that to extend the bed, it is only necessary to manually release the catch and pull on the truss rod 19 which will place the bed over the cushion 12 of the davenportfbut out of contact therering frame, a movableback portion, arigid with, said cushion always remaining. in fixed position. .The back 29 may be lowered when the bed is in folded position or when the same is extended,in which case the arms 31 will pivotcabout the pins 32 and the back may pivot about the pin 35 so that the link 36 will move relatively to the pin '39 until the upholstered back reaches its correct position relatively tothe cushion. i Having described .'my invention what" I claim as new and desire'to'secure' by. Letters Patent, is .l I 7 7 1. In a davenpo 'tr'bed, a frame having endinembersand a-fi'xed cushion, a movable l back; portion, standards rising 'above said.
end members, a cross-piece connecting said standards, an angle plate secured to said crossspiece, a metallic: plate fastenmlto said back portion, an arm pivotally connected at each end to said plates, a slotted link piv0tally connected to said metallic plate and a pin secured to said arm engaging in the slot of'said link. n
2, In a davenport-bed having a frame adapted to receive the folded bed, and a movable back portion, a hinged connection between said back portionand frame consisting of an arm pivotally connected'to said .frame and back portion and a link pivotally connected to said back portionhaving .a pin and slotconnection'withsaid arm. 7
3. In a davenport-bed'having a supportarm pivotally connected 'to the back portion and frame whereby the back portion may move, to an invertedposition" with the normally upper part of the same in the rear of the frame, and means for limiting the pivotal movement of said-back portion 1 relatively to said arm.
