i This invention relates `to improvements in davenport beds of the type where the bed frame and mattress are folded within the seat of the davenport. The principal ob* ject of thepresent invention is to provide an improved folding bed frame foruse in connection with the davenport, the said frame folding into small space in such a manner as to allow plenty ofk room for the mattress and bed clothes.
Another object of the invention is to construct the davenport in two sections, the upper part including the side arms, seat and back rest being removable from the lower art, whereby the davenport may be more easilyhandled and may be taken through doors and stairways through which the ordinary solidly constructed davenport cannot be moved.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combinations `and arrangement of parts, herein illustrated and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to corresponding parts in several views by the same numerals of reference, the davenport comprises a base 1 to which is removably attached the upper portion 2. As here shown, the latter is removable from the base 1 by removing the slotted the opening of the bed.

gagement with the hooks. The hooks 6depend for a considerable distance below the pivot, which provides a reinforcement against lateral movement. This pin v and hook connection is placed vat the rear end of the davenport while the slotted plate and pin is placed at the front, the two holding devices effectively securing the parts together.
The folding bed arrangement comprises parallel side bars 10 between which is secured a wire fabric 11. The longitudinal side bars may be formed from angles and comprise sections 12, 13 and 14e.` Section 13 is pivotally` attached to section 12 by means of the short trap 15 and section 14; is likewise attached to section 13 by means of a strap 16. One corner of each strapas shown atl?, and one corner of eachangle section as shown at 1S, is rounded to allow the parts to lit close together `and yet turn on their pivots. y
' I provide a seat cushion and a back cushion, the former denoted by i0 is attached on each side to a bar 4t2 which is pivotally attached to a base as shown at L13. The bars 42 are extended beyond the pivot and to each extension is attached a spring 44. The seat cushion is positively locked in its raised position by means of the lock bar 45 Which proj ectslaterally from the bar 4t2. The lock bar is provided with a bent end a6 which is engaged by the rear link `19 when the bed is open, thus preventing the parts from rotating on the pivot 43. y
The back cushion Il1 is ren'lovably attached to the mechanism of the seat cushion by `means oit the pins -Il-7 which engage .the open slots i8 in the extension 49 on the side oi" bar 4.2. Thejback of the seat cushion'slides on an abutment which supports the cushion both in its raised and closed position.
When the davenport is folded and it is desired to convert it into a bed,the seat cushion is raised carrying with it the back cushion. `Then the toot ends ot the side angles 10 are raised u Wardl 1 and swunc out of the base. This causes the legs 27 to `fall in position and the links 19 to lock the cushions in their elevated position. The bars 4:2 and connected metal parts all lie close to the Vends of the davenport and hence are concealed from view. The arms of the top part are connected to each other in any preferred manner, such asthe barsl Which have slotted plates 52 engaging` pins 53 in the arms, and these arms are held in lateral position by the tongue and groove arrangement. When the davenport is to bemoved the back cushion is lifted out, the top part moved around the pins l'and the hook 6 released. This allows the top to be lifted free of the base andso allows each piece to be moved independently.
As shown in Figures 6 and 7 rivet 60 has a large head which projects on the outside of angle 13. This head, under certain conditions, contacts with the link 25 and the latter is oilset as shown at G2 so that when the link moves away trein the end of the slot 26 it may pass the rivet head. This construction` is used so tliadwhen folding, the bed frame lirst folds at the joint between angles l2 and 13. As it folds at that point the upper end `oi' the link 25 slides back in slot 26 which allows the iframe to then fold at the joint between angles 13 and 14.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new:

In a davenport of the character described, a frame element, legs supporting the saine adapted to be swung upwardly from a rearward horizontal position, a seat adapted to overlie the frame element and pivoted for swinging rearwardly into yan upright position, and an extension arm associated with the seat made to be caught by one of'the upstanding legs when the seat is lifted for preventing the latter from swinging back into a horizontal position as long as the legs l0 are in an upward position. e
