UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
,COMBINED FOLDING DED .AND COUCH.
Application filed Hay 10, 1924. Serial No. 712,331.
M invention relates to a folding bed and couc 1 combined. i
The object of my invention is to construct a lfolding bed, having a couch, which when b the bed folds, the couch will unfold, providing a useful piece of furniture, when the bed is not engaged.
A further object of the invention is to provide a folding bed serving two purposes and presentable as a piece of furniture in the room.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a locking means, when the bed is unfolded, and also means for holdinor the bedding in place while it is being fade up. Referrin to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevatlon, of the bed unfolded, parts removed for convenience' of illustration.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the bed folded, with side aneling of the bed removed, and
one end o the seat removed for convenience of illustration. Fig. 3 is a. top view of the bed unfolded. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view, through the base, showing the leaf spring support or lock for the head of the bed. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail of the levers operatingthe locks. Fig. 6 is an edge view through Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the bar lock at the foot of the bed.
1 is a cabinet vertically positioned, having panelled ends and back and on the inside of the ends are grooves functioning as guides for certain parts hereinafter described. 2 are side frames for the bed. 3 are the springs,y representing the ordinary coil springs, supporting a mattress 4c. 5 is the cushion seat of the couch, and 6 is the cushion back for said seat, and the said back and seat are positioned between ends 7, which is integral to, or rather, firmly attached to the cabinet 1, the object of which is to provide a couch, having theordinary end as in a-separate piece of couch furniture. 8 is a frame support for the foot of the bed, said frame being braced by barsI 9 and 10, each of said bars being pivotally mounted at both ends as shown at 11, and the said bar 10 having a curvature as at A, formed to receive the end of bar 9, for convenience of attaching and operating the folding principle of the frame 8, functioning as the foot support of the bed. When the bed is unfolded and the frame 8 is in its erect position as shown in Fig. 1, it is held firmly in place by means of a bar 12, passing through a mortice in bar 10 and the said bar 12 passes through a mortice through the bed frame as shown at 13, by which means the members 2 are supported firmly at a right angle to the foot frame 8, and the said bars 12 and 12 are pivotally connected to a T member 14 which is pivotally mounted on a late 15, at 16, and the said member 14 is a apted to rock by action of a bar 17, the said bar being actuated to a lockin position by springs 18 and to disengage ars 12 and 12, from the mortice in bars 10, the operator will take hold of a hook 19 drawing it to the rear, and the said T member having an elongated groove 20,
engaging on a pin 21, which is rigidly connected to a bar 17, and the movement of said bar 17 is means for disengagement of the bars 10 when the locking bars 12 and 12 are withdrawn. The same mechanism as detailed in Fig. 5, except being reversed, is designed to operate disengaging bars 22 and 22', which is at the head of the bed, and the said bars traveling in opposite directions from the center will engage' al leaf spring tensioned member 23, at B, disengagin said member so that the roller will travel ownward in the groove, the' said member functions as a support engaging under a roller 24, which is mounted tothe bed frame by a stud 25, the said roller functioning as a guide, following a channel 26, when the said bed is being folded. v
The head of the bed frame 2 i endently supported by a bar 27, the said bar being pivotally connected to the head of the cabinet at 28, and to the frame 2 at 29 and the said bar being curved at its lower end, so that the straight portion will be positioned nearer the vertical face of the cabinet when the bed is unfolded. 30 is a head frame of the bed and the said frame is pivotally connected at 31, so that when the bed is folded as shown in Fig. 2, the said frame will function as binding means to hold the bedding firmly in place. The said frame 3() extending across the head of the bed, and engaging near the sides of the cabinet, renders it possible for a roller 32, being revolvably mounted on said head frame to engage in a channel 33, the said channel being vertical with the cabinet at its lower portion and angling to the position of the vertical line of the head frame. The object of the curvature or angle is to provide for the thickness of the bed when folded, causing the said head frame to engage with the bedding properly as heretofore described. 3dare springs functioning as a counter-balance for the bed frame to assist when folding the bed, the said spring being connected to the head of the bed on a pin 35,' and the opposite end connected to an eye 36. To the side rails of the bed frame 2 is firmly attached a bracket 37, and on the ends of the seat is rmly attached a bar 38, the said members being pivotally connected at 39 so that when said bed is being folded, the seat 5, having its bearing on a roller 40, engaging on a curved track 41, which is also firmly attached to the seat, the object of which is that Whenythe bed is being folded, the said seat will be drawn rearward toward the cabinet, elevating its position as shown in Fig. 2, the square end C of the member 4K1, engaging on the roller, 'oviding a substantial support and the seat ing in a level position. A further object of this mechanism is to provide means, so that when the back and seat of the couch are folded together, they will lower to a position to accommodate for the proper height of the bed, from the floor. v 'llo unfold the bed from its cabinet I take hold of the top portion rocking it outward to a horizontal position at which time the roller 24 passes the ends of the leaf springs 23, and the tension of said sprin s will cause the ends thereof to engage direc y under the rollers functioning as a lock, and simultaneously at the foot of the bed the bars l2 and 12 will engage in mortises positioned in one of the foot frame braces l0, and which means also locks the foot frame in its upright position resting on the floor. To fold the bed, bar 17 is drawn rearward by takin hold of the hook 19 positioned on the end t ureof and the said bar being pivotedly connected to the rocking means of the locking bars will actuate the bars at the head and the foot of the bed to disengagement simultaneously, that is to say the foot bars will be drawn from mortises and the head bars will engage against the leaf spring pressing them from under the rollers at which time the end frame may be rocked parallel ,with the bed frame and the bed raised to an upright position entering the cabinet.
I do not confine this mechanism to operate from the end of the bed alone, as it can be applied to the side, in which event, the
couch will be made of sufficient length to function as a davenport, and also by such an arrangement the cabinet enclosure for the bed will be reduced in height having a more artistic'appearance as a piece of furniture, and such other modications may be made as lies Within the scope of the appended claims, and what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
l. In a folding bed and couch, a vertical cabinet, bars pivotedly connected at the top of said cabinet, channels in the side Walls of said cabinet, a leaf spring positioned in said channels, a bed frame supported by said bars and pivotally connected thereto a spaced distance from the end of said frame adjacent to said cabinet, a counter balance spring, said spring attached to the base of said cabinet and to the end of said bed frame, rollers on the end of said bed frame slidably en gaging in said slots and adapted to rest on the end of said leaf springs functioning resisting means for said counter balance spring when said frame is transversely positione to said cabinet, means operablefroln the foot of the bed for disengaging said leaf springs from said rollers prior to folding the bed in the cabinet.
2. In a folding bed and couch, in a bed of the kind described, the combination of a vertically positioned cabinet, of bars pivotedly connected near the top of said cabinet,
of a bed frame pendently and pivotally supported by said bars near one end to turn downward to horizontal position, of a counter balance spring and a leaf spring counteracting the tension of said counter balance spring when the bed is turned down to horizontal position, a foot frame,said frame pivotedly connectedto said bed frame by means of bars automatically positioning one as a brace and the other as a tie for a transverse position to said bed frame and adapted to rock to a parallel position'to said frame, a pair of bars functioning as a locking means for said foot frame and in'close proximity thereto, said bars adapted to reciprocate to and from each other longitudinally by means of a rocker member pivotally engaging with the adjacent ends thereof, said rocker member being actuated by a bar transversely positioned to second said bars, the said bar extending to the opposite end of the bed frame simultaneously operating a similar leaf spring releasing means but the movement of the locking bars of last said means being the reverse to theA move.- ment of the first said locking bars.
