Y T all wiwm t may concern Be it known that I, LEROY C. PHENIX, a citizen of the UnitetiL States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county7 of Los Angeles and State of California,` havel inventedga new-` n and useful Davenport, of which thefollowving is a specification.
This invention relates to. a davenport. or combination lounge and bed,y and tbe main object of the inventionis to provide a devenport which can be quicklyand easily opened and closed. Y .Y w
A further object of the invention is to pro-` vide a construction in Which the back member of the clavenport remains-in iXed position,l While thedavenportis being changed from closed to open position,
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter; e t
The accompanying'elrawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention, and referring thereto: i i f- Figure -l is al plan View of tbe davenport in closed position. Fig. 2 is a Vert'oai. section thereof in closed position. Fig. 3 isa plan View of the davennort iii-open `position. Fig. i is avertioal seotionoie the clavennort in open position. Fig. 5: is a Vertical` section of a modiiedorm of the Clavenjoort, taken at the end of the seat and bed Aspring frame, so as to sbow said parts in eievation, Fig. 6v is a Vertical section ofthe form shown in Fig. 5, infextendecl position. 1
The frame of the davenport comprises end members l and a back member 2 rigily con'- neoting said end members,` said back member Q-being proviried, if ciesired.y with upholstery or cushion means 3. frame member extending vertically upward from the front edge of the inner bed spring member to connect with the forward edge of the upper bed spring member. In thls position ofy the intermediate bed spring member, the rail 8 thereon holds the front member 20 'in position to close the front of the davenport. The seat 22 extends rearwardly from the top of said front member ofthe davenport to the rear edge of the upper or outer bed frame member 9. 'The back 2 of the davenport or the upholstery 3 thereon approaches close to the seat 22 when in this extended position. The braces 25 extending from the'4 rail 8 engage with or extend below 'the bottom of the seat 22 so as to elastically support the same, there being a sulicient number of these braces to serve as an extension of the metallic bed spring fabric, such extension reaching to the front member 20.
To open up the davenport for use as a bed, the upper or outer bed frame member 9 is drawn upwardly and forwardly, thereby causing the intermediate bed frame rails 6 to swing downwardly, causing the brackets 18 thereon to swing the rail 8 downwardly and rearwardly and withdraw the front member 2O into position shown in 4, wherein it will be housed beneath `the be When the bed is fully opened in this manner, 4the seat 22 is also supported' beneath the bed, extending from the front rail of the outer bed frame member 9 to the front edge of the front member or apron 20. The legs 11 are normally housedin recesses 28 at the ends of the back, but when the bed frame member 9 is turned down to posi- ,tion shown in Fig. 4, these legs rest on the floor to support said bed .frame member.
In some cases it is desired to have the bed vextend lengthwise instead of sidewise from the front of the davenport, and in such cases the bed frame may be constructed as shown in Figs.l 5 and 6, the construction being similar to that above described, except that supplementary bedframe members 30 and 31 are provided,
hinged together at 32, the member 30 being hinged to the bed-frame 9 at 33,- so that when the'members 4, 6, 9, -30 and 31 are extended as shown in Fig. 6, they will form a bed of the required length. The seat 22 is fastened at one edge to the front member 20, as above described, but its opposite edge is secured to a bar 34 carriedby swinging arms 35 pivoted on the bed-frame member 30, so as to fold thereon as shown` in Fig. 5. The outermost bed-frame member 31 is provided with a leg 36,. pivoted thereto to.` fold thereon and having a notch 37 adapted to engage a pin 38 on member 9,`
vto lock said members in folded position.
What I claim is: v
frame,l of an inner bed frame' member rigidly secured to the frame, an intermediate bed frame vmember pivoted to the inner bed frame member, an outer bed frame member pivoted to the intermediate bed frame member, the front member connected with the bed frame member, a seat connected with the outer `bed frame member and the front member, and braces secured tothe intermediate bed frame member and to the front member, said seat when closed resting on the braces and said front member and disposed under the bed frame members when thel latter are extended.
2. The combination with4 a davenport frame, of an inner bed frame member carried by the frame, an intermediate bed frame member pivotally connected to the inner 1. The combination with a davenport bed frame member, an outer bed frame member pivoted to the intermediate bed frame member, brackets rigidly secured to the intermediate bed frame member and ex'- tending outwardly at right angles thereto and being arranged one above the other, a front member rigidly secured to said brackets, a seat secured to the upper edge of the4 front member and to the outer bed member and to said intermediate bed frame member to extend over the outer bed frame member 'when the latter is folded over on the top of said inner bed frame member,
e and t'o extend under said outer bed frame `member when the latter is extended, and
bracing means connected to said intermediate and outer bed frame members, and
adapted to extend beneath said seat when the bed frame is folded to support the seat.
4. The combination with a davenport frame of an inner bed frame member rigldly connected with the frame, an intermediate bed frame member pivotally connected with the inner bed frame memberand being free from connection with the davenport frame, an outer bed frame member pivotally connected with the intermediate lbed,l frame member and arranged to rest upon theinner bed frame member when in folded position, all of said bed lframe members to'li'e in the lsame horizontal plane when extended,
brackets secured to the ends of the intermediate bed frame member and extending frame of an inner bed fra-me member rigidly connected With the frame, an intermediate 'bed :trame member pivotally connected with the inner bed frame member and being free from connection with the davenport frame, an outer. bed :trame member pivotally conneeted with the intermediate bed frame member and arranged to rest upon the inner bed frame member when in folded position, all of said bed frame members to he in the same horizontal plane when extended, brackets secured to the ends of the intermediate bed frame member and extending outwardly therefrom, a bar carried by and between the ends ofthe brackets, a one-piece non-ilexible front member secured against the bar in rigid parallel relation to the intermediate bed frame member, a seat secured to the front member and the outer bed frame member, said seat and front mem...A
ber to lie beneath the bed frame members when the latter are extended, and additional bracing means connected rigidly at its ends with the intermediate bed frame member and the front member.
6. The combination with a davenport frame, of an inner bed frame member rigidly connected with the frame, an'intermediatef bed frame member pivotally connected with the inner bed frame member and being free' fromconnectlon with the davenport iti-ame,l
an outer bed frame member pivotally connected with the intermediate bed' frame member, all of said bed trame members to lie in the same horizontal plane when extended, a one-piece non-flexible front meniber, means to secure said front member in spaced rigid parallel relation to the intermediate bed frame member, and a seat se Acured to the front member and the outer bed frame member, said seat and front member to lie beneath the bed frame members when the latter are extended.
In testimony whereof, l have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California this 17th day of February, 1914.
