[Class 52 (ii).] In a folding bed in which the sections of the frame articulate endways and fold joint uppermost so that its general plane when folded is substantially vertical, one or each section is in extended position so supported from the floor by a leg or the like as to provide the section with a shifting fulcrum on which the section turns during the first part of the closing movement, the weight being afterwards transferred to the free end of the section. For instance, legs 14, Fig. 1, may be pivoted to the section 2 intermediately of the ends thereof, and connected by links 15 to the other sections 1, so that on folding the weight is transferred from the leg to the free end of the section. Wheels or castors 17, 18 are preferably provided on the leg and on the end of the section. The head end of the inner section 1 is fixed to posts 4 hinged to a base 5 which may form the bottom of a cabinet 6. Stretcher bars 7 on the frame support springs on which the mattress of wire mesh or other spring construction is supported. The foot of the mattress is fixed to a sliding bar 10 which is linked by chains to a folding foot board 12 in such a manner that when the board 12 is erected the mattress is tensioned. The joint 3 between the sections is of the rule-joint type, and flexible straps 16 may be provided to prevent the bedding from being caught in the joint. The invention may be applied to a folding bed of the camp bed type consisting of a frame of two sections 22, 23, Fig. 7. Each section is provided with folding legs 24, 25, the legs on each section being linked to the other section by links 26, 27. The frame folds in a similar manner to the above described cabinet bed. The transverse end members of the frame may be hinged to fold in the middle.
