2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Aug. 7, 1935 Ben/M67060? ATTORNEY WITNESS Patented Aug. 16, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFEQ 2 Claims.
The invention relates to a bed and more especially to a collapsible or extensible bed.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a bed of this character, wherein the same when collapsed will be concealed within a cabinet, the latter functioning as a dresser or other article of furniture and thus the collapsing of the bed affords space within an enclosure and such bed will have disappeared, the operation of the bed being simple and assures easy control in the extending or collapsing of the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a bed of this character, wherein on the collapsing thereof the mattress carried thereby will be automatically folded into compact form and the latter with the bed will be concealed within a cabinet or the like, the bed being of novel construction.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a bed of this character, which is comparatively simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and effective in its operation, strong, durable, readily and easily handled, assuring compactness when in collapsed condition and inexpensive to manu- 25 facture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through 39 a cabinet showing the bed constructed in accordance with the invention a part thereof and extended.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation showing the bed partly folded.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional View through the cabinet showing the bed collapsed or folded.
Figure 5 is a front elevation thereof.
Figure 6 is a bottom plan view of the bed when extended.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in 50 the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates generally a cabinet having at the top thereof a drawer l3 while provided in this cabinet below the said drawer is a compartment I l which 55 opens through the front of the said cabinet, the
drawer being manipulated from the front of the latter.
Adapted to occupy the space H within the cabinet A is the collapsible bed which comprises a foot section or board l 2 having connection with lazy tongs B, these being at opposite sides of a canvas mattress support l3 and each lazy tong includes the crossed levers I 4 pivoted at their crossing points as at l5 while the levers at their meeting ends are pivoted together at l6, these .10 being in the form of rods and underlie the support l3 at a distance considerably below the same.
The tongs B at one end have the sliding connections at I! with the sides of the cabinet A inwardly of the space I I therein and likewise these tongs B at the other end through linkage l3 and I9 have pivotal connection at ll with the foot section or board l2 at the brackets thereon.
The support l3 through the instrumentality of 20 the end springs 2| connected therewith and with the pivot I1 and to a cross piece fixed to and between the brackets 20, respectively is sustained under tension when the bed is extended while supplementing the support [3 are spring tensioned straps 22, these underlying the said support l3 and have connection with the lazy tongs B, the tensioning of said straps 22 being lateral so that the support [3 will be prevented from sagging on the extending of the bed.
When the bed has been collapsed by pushing inwardly upon the section I 2, it will be concealed within the space H in the cabinet A.
Associated with the end portions of the lazy tongs B are lifter levers 23 and 24, respectively, the latter carrying connections I! while the levers 23 are swingingly connected to the outermost pivot [5 of said tongs. The levers 24, each by the connection I? slides in a curved slotted track 25, there being two of these fixed to opposite sides of the cabinet and a link 25 pivoted to said lever 24 and at 21 to the extension 28 of one of the levers I 4 while the levers 23 each is pivoted at 30 to a link 3| pivoted at 32 to an extension 33 of another of said levers l4. These levers 23 and 24, which are in pairs, each carries at the inner ends a coiled tensioneol lifter strap 34 which is disposed transversely of a mattress 35 when upon the support l3 so as to be disposed between the latter and said mattress at a breaking joint 36 between folding sections 31 of said mattress 35 so that when the bed is collapsed the mattress 35 will automatically fold into compact form under the action of the levers 23 and 24 and the lifter strap 34 connecting with each pair of said levers Z3 and 24 as is clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings.
When the bed is to be occupied on the extending cf the lazy tongs B the mattress 35 will automatically unfold and be supported upon the support I3 which is rendered taut when the lazy tongs B are extended, the levers 23 and 24 being lowered on the extension of said lazy tongs. When the bed is collapsed under the action of the lazy tongs B the levers 23 and 24 will be swung upwardly and in this manner automatically folding the mattress 35 so that the latter and the said bed will become concealed within the space H in the cabinet A as is shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. The links l8 are of considerably greater length than the links IS, the latter being slightly curved and are pivoted at l9 to the end toggle levers of the lazy tongs B. These links I8 and I3 when the lazy tongs B have been extended will sustain the foot section or board l2 in a perpendicular position, there being no possibility of the closing of the lazy tongs B accidentally when the bed is occupied due to the fact that the weight upon the mattress through such occupancy is distributed throughout the length of the lazy tongs laterally to opposite sides thereof and the strain is placed at the crossing points l of the levers I l while strain in a longitudinal direction is nil.
The drawer It] carries handles 38 and the foot section or board also carries the handles 39. The bed is extended and collapsed in an easy manner through the operation of the lazy tongs B and also the mattress 35 is automatically folded and unfolded as hereinbefore set forth.
It is, of course, understood that the mattress 35 is supported by the spring tensioned strap when occupied for sleeping or resting purposes. The links 26 and 3| through their connection with the lazy tongs B and the levers 23 and 24 will automatically swing the said levers vertically on the folding and unfolding of the bed, the levers 24 being slidably connected by the connections I! with the tracks 25 so that the lazy tongs when collapsed will be housed well within the cabinet A.
What is claimed is:
1. A collapsible bed comprising a cabinet having a displaceable front forming a foot board, a pair of lazy-tongs arranged between the cabinet and the foot board and havingv connection therewith in spaced parallel relation to each other for extension and contraction without and within said cabinet, a flexible mattress support yieldably fitted at opposite ends with the connections between the lazy-tongs, the cabinet and the foot board, respectively, a sectional, foldable mattress on said mattress support and having fold lines remote from its ends, lifting levers on each side of the lazy-tongs pivoted on the lazytongs near each end thereof, respectively, and extending toward the center of the lazy-tongs, means operativelyconnecting the outer ends of said levers with the lazy-tongs whereby retracting the lazy-tongs lifts the inner ends of the levers, and resilient lifting members interposed between the mattress and mattress support and connecting each lever with a corresponding lever on the opposite side whereby on retraction of the lazy-tongs the mattress will be lifted along fold lines remote from the ends thereof and folding of the mattress assisted.
2. A collapsible bed comprising a cabinet having a displaceable front forming a foot board, a pair of lazy-tongs arranged between the cabinet and the foot board and having connection therewith in spaced parallel relation to each other for extension and contraction without and within said cabinet, a flexible mattress support yieldably fitted at opposite ends with the connections between the lazy-tongs, the cabinet and the foot board, respectively, a sectional, foldable mattress on said mattress support and having fold lines remote from its ends, lifting levers on each side of the lazy-tongs pivoted on the lazytongs near each end thereof, respectively, and extending toward the center of the lazy-tongs, means operatively connecting the outer ends of said levers with the lazy-tongs whereby retracting the lazy-tongs lifts the inner ends of the levers, resilient lifting members interposed between the mattress and mattress support and connecting each lever with a corresponding lever on the opposite side whereby on retraction of the lazy-tongs the mattress will be lifted along fold lines remote from the ends thereof and folding of the mattress assisted and tensioned straps connected at intervals with the lazy-tongs and underlying the mattress support intermediate with respect to the tensioned ends of said support.
