DAV/0 6'. Z/if/IMLE a ATTOPA/[Kf United States Patent CONVERTIBLE OTTGMAN BED David C. Laemmle, Upper Brookville, N.Y. Bebry Bedding Corp, 192 Lexington Ave., New York, N.Y.) Filed July 19, 1960, Ser. No. 43,886 2 Claims. (Cl. -29) This invention relates to an ottoman which is convertible into a bed.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a seat structure which has all the appearance of an ottoman and which includes connected sections adapted to be disposed in longitudinal alignment to provide a bed and to be arranged with certain of the sections supported in spaced relation with a rigid frame section for receiving mattress sections therebetween when in use as an ottoman.
Another object of the invention is to provide an ottoman frame composed of a plurality of connected Sections which are firmly supported by one of the sections when in ottoman formation.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an ottoman composed of a fixed frame section having a fixed mattress supporting frame, an inter-mediate section having a mattress supporting frame connected with the fixed frame section by a pair of links at each side for swinging movement of the intermediate section into overlying relation with the fixed section, and an outer section having a mattress supporting frame pivotally connected with the intermediate section and swingable to nested relation therewith for supporting a mattress as an ottoman.
Still another object of the invention is to connect the mattress supporting frames of two of the sections by crossed links for swinging movement of one of said sections from aligned formation with the other to a superposed spaced relation therewith supported by said links.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a seat structure of said character which is so constructed and arranged as to permit of the convenient and easy movement to and from bed and ottoman forming relations.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of an ottoman constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the same in bed forming relation.
FIG. 2 is a side View thereof with the mattress sections shown thereon in broken outline.

Referring to the drawings, the ottoman includes an inned frame section 10, an intermediate frame section 11 and an outer frame section 12, each of rectangular formation, which are connected together from aligned formation to provide a bed frame to a collapsed or folded relation to serve as an ottoman.
The inner frame section is a rigid section consisting of a mattress supporting frame section 13 composed of opposite side rails 14 and 15 of angle iron construction arranged with the flanges 16 and 17 thereof respectively disposed uppermost and extending inwardly and the vertical flanges 18 and 19 thereof respectively located outermost and extending vertically. The side rails 14 and 15 "ice are connected by an end rail 20 which is riveted or other wise aflixed thereto and which is arranged with the flange 21 thereof located uppermost and extending inwardly and the flange 22 thereof located outermost and extending vertically. The frame section 13 is supported by front and rear legs 23 and 24 riveted or otherwise aiflxed to the ends of the side rails 14 and 15 and a cross bar 25 of angle iron construction is affixed to the front legs 23 below the side rails 14 and 15.
The intermediate section 11 includes a mattress supporting frame section 28 consisting of opposite side rails 29 and 30 of angle iron construction arranged with the flanges 31 and 32. thereof respectively disposed uppermost and extending inwardly and with the flanges 33 and 34 thereof disposed outermost and extending vertically. The frame section as is supported by front legs 35 pivoted on pivot pins 36 to the outer ends of the vertical flanges 33 and 34 of the side rails 29 and 30. The legs 35 are connected by an angle cross bar 37 which is riveted or otherwise affixed thereto below the frame section 28. At its inner end the frame section 28 is swingably connected with the frame section 13 by a pair of crossed links 38 and 39 at each side. The crossed links 38 are pivoted on pivot pins 40 at their inner ends to the vertical flanges of the side rails 14 and 15 respectively and at their outer ends the said links are pivoted to the vertical flanges of the side rails 29 and 30 on pivot pins 41. At their inner ends the links 89 are pivoted on pivot pins 42 to the vertical flanges of the side rails 14 and 15 in forwardly spaced relation from the pivot pins 40 and at their outer ends the said links 39 are pivoted on pivot pins 43 to the vertical flanges of the side rails 29 and 30 in forwardly spaced relation from the pivot pins 41. Thus, the links 38 are pivoted to the intermediate section 11 closer to the inner end thereof than the links 39 and the links 39 are pivoted to the inner section It} closer to the outer end thereof than the links 38 whereby said links cross as shown in FIG. 4 of the drawings and the links 38 are of curved formation so as to extend over the inner ends of the pivots 42 as shown in FIG. 2 of the drawings.
The outer frame section 12 includes a mattress supporting frame section 44 composed of opposite side rails 45 and 46 of angle iron construction arranged with the flanges 47 and 48 thereof respectively disposed uppermost and extending inwardly and the flanges 49 and 50 thereof located outermost and extending vertically. The side rails 45 and 46 are connected by an end rail 51 affixed to the outer end thereof which is arranged with the flange 52 thereof arranged uppermost and extending inwardly and the flange 53 thereof arranged outermost and extending vertically. The frame section 44 is supported by front legs 55 riveted or otherwise affixed to the end rail 51 and at its inner end the frame section 44 is pivoted to the frame section 28 on the pivot pins 36.
A fabric spring 57 of any desired character is affixed at its opposite longitudinal side edges to the inturned flanges 16 and 17, 31 and 32, and 47 and 48 of said frame sections and at its ends the fabric spring is aflixed to the inturned flanges of the end rails 20 and 51 of the inner and outer frame sections for supporting mattress sections 58 and 59 in alignment when serving as a bed. When the frame sections are folded so as to dispose the same in ottoman formation, the mattress section 58 is doubled over between the frame sections 13 and 28 as shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 of the drawings. The mattress section 59 is disposed on the frame section 12 which is arranged uppermost when in ottoman formation. A cross bar 60 extends between the vertical flanges 33 and 34 of the frame section 28 to retain the side rails 29 and 30 in spaced relation at their inner ends. The said cross bar is affixed by the pivots 41 to said side rails and is downwardly offset intermediate its ends whereby there is sufiicient space between the same and the fabric spring 57 so that the spring may fiex downwardly without engaging the cross bar when a weight is imposed thereupon.
*When the sections are in ottoman forming formation, the intermediate section 11 is supported at one end in spaced relation above the frame section 13 by the links 38 and 39, The rear legs 2 extend above the frame section 13 and are provided with adjustable screws 62 which support the end of the frame section 11 remote from the links 33 and 39. The screws 62 engage through threaded members 63 mounted on the upper ends of the legs 2-iwhereby the screws 62 may be rotated for adjusting the length of the protruding portions thereof so that the frame section 23 may be disposed in the same spaced relation throughout from the frame section 13.
The sections 11 and 12 are movable with reference to the section it) to provide a bed with the sections disposed in alignment and to provide an ottoman when the sections 11 and 12 are supported on the section it); In moving the said sections to bed forming relation, the outer section 12 is raised and pulled outwardly so that the sections 11 and 12 unfold from the nested relation shown in FIG. 4 of the drawings to substantially longitudinally extending relation with the sections. The sections 11 and 12 are moved into supported relation on the section it by lifting the outer section 112- and moving the same together with the section 11 inwardly to thereby move the links 38 and 39 to upwardly extending relation and the section 11 supported at the rear on the screw The frame section 44 of the outer section 12 is of slightly lesser width than the frame section 28 and folds so that the vertical flanges 59 and 50 of the side rails 45 and 46 rest upon the inwardly directed flanges 3'1 and 32 of the side rails 29 and lift as shown in section in FIG. of the drawings. It will be understood that the movement of the sections 1-1 and '12 to ottoman formation as shown inFiG. 3 of the drawings, the mattress section 58 folds therewith between the frame sections 13 and 28. In this folding movement the fabric spring 57 folds upon itself at the pivotal connections of the frame sections 28 and 44 and the fabric spring is suficiently resilient and flexible to bend into upright relation between the ends of the mattress supporting frame sections 13 and 28. Also, when in ottoman formation, the cross bar 60 may be swung to dispose the offset portion thereof from depending relation to substantially horizontal relation.
The vertical flanges i9 and Sit of the frame section 44 are recessed adjacent their outer ends as at 66 to provide clearances for the inner ends of the pivots 41 when the and the links 38 and 3E? swing outer frame section 12 is superimposed on the intermediate frame section 11 in ottoman formation.
A panel 67 is affixed at its ends to the rear legs 24 above the frame section 13 and constitutes a headboard against which a pillow may be positioned when the sections are in bed formation.
