[Class 65 (i)] [See also Group X] In a fanlight stay and operating device of the kind comprising a cord passing over a pulley on the frame and downwards to a point on the sash or a part thereon, with a locking bar having pin and notch engagement with the frame, the cord, between the pulley and its free end, engages a projection or arm on or abutting against the locking bar to release the engagement of the bar. In the form shown, the locking bar 11 pivoted to the sash has a series of pins such as 13, 14 to engage with a bracket 20 on the frame ; the operating cord 23 passes over a pulley on the bracket 20 and a second pulley 27 at the lower end of the locking bar and is attached to an arm 25 pivoted to the bracket 20. The arm 25 carries a pin 28 which may be engaged by the cord 23 to press the arm against the locking bar and move the latter clear of the bracket 20 for lowering the sash. The bracket 20 has a tooth 20<a> by which the sash is supported in any open position by any pin such as 13 and a projection 20b by which further opening of the sash is prevented by engagement with any pin such as 14, so that the sash is positively locked in any position, including the closed. Tightening of the cord for opening the sash moves the bar sufficiently to free the pin 14 from projection 20b, the pins successively riding over the bracket 20 and snapping over the tooth 20<a> as the sash is opened. For closing, the bar must be moved farther, by means of the arm 25. In an alternative form, the locking bar has a number of teeth to engage over a pin on the frame, with one reversed tooth to engage under the pin to lock the sash closed, no locking being obtained in other positions. The arm 25 may be replaced by a projection on the locking bar, the end of the cord being then attached to the bracket 20. The free end of the cord may be attached to the end of the arm 25. In a modification, the pulley 27 is carried on a separate bar pivoted to the sash. Rollers may be provided on the engaging pins.
