Abstract
439,418. Knitting-machines. LEEDHAM, L. H., and WILDT & CO., Ltd., Adelaide Works, Leicester. May 3, 1934, No. 13438. [Class 74 (ii)] A "fixed bit designer wheel, that is, one in which the operative bits are not selectively adjustable into and out of operative positions in their tricks 21 during rotation of the wheel, is arranged to carry a complete set of bits, whether operative or not. The body portion 14 of the wheel is secured to its spindle 15 by nuts 18, 19 and carries a tricked cylindrical shell 20 for the bits 29. When bits are placed in the outer tricks 21 their heads 30, which may be folded over as shown in Fig. 4, project into position to operate the needles of a circular knitting machine &c. Inoperative bits are placed with their heads turned inwards and stand at a higher level. A notch 32 receives a spring band 31 to hold the inoperative bits in place. Operative bits are put into and out of position to engage needles, jacks or other sliding elements by cams 25, 26. The wheel is driven from the needle cylinder by gears 22, 33, the teeth of which are cut to standard profiles. To avoid backlash, the teeth are inclined at an angle determined by constants deducible from the lay out of the individual machine. Specification 19314/10, [Class 74 (ii)], is referred to.
