[Class 75 (i)] A device for producing a flash for taking photographs comprises a casing having flexible sides 1, 2, of which at least one is transparent, containing a combustible metal and having means for generating or supplying oxygen, and for subsequently igniting the metal. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the outer casing 1, 2 encloses a similar inner envelope 3, 4, against one side of which there is a reflecting sheet 5. The inner envelope contains a thin layer 6 of magnesium or aluminium in powder or leaf form above a flat tube 15, below which is a receptacle 9 containing an oxygen producing charge 11, such as a mixture of a metallic powder and potassium chlorate. The bottom of the sides of the casing are fastened together by means of electric terminals 7, 7<1>, 7<11> adapted to be connected to corresponding terminals on a small electric battery provided with switches. First, the circuit of a resistance wire 12 in the chlorate mixture 11 is closed, and this generates oxygen, which passes through the tube 15 and a cloth bag strainer 16 to the space occupied by the magnesium 6. The circuit of the igniter 18 of this is then closed. In a modification, the tube 15 is omitted and the strainer 16 placed directly on the end of the receptacle 9. The casing may contain a sheet of paper bearing an advertisement.
