Abstract
160,828. Skorpik, J. March 31, 1921. Electrodes; connections; electrolytes; cases; cells.-A dry battery for use with pocket lamps is constructed so that exhausted materials can be readily renewed. Each cell comprises a carbon electrode d mounted in a metal holder e to which a terminal strip i is secured. Surrounding the electrode d is a removable unit comprising depolarizing plates k of manganese dioxide and graphite not greater than 3 mm. in thickness, and electrolyte carriers l of corrugated cardboard &c., the whole being clamped together by a zinc electrode c which is bent into the form of a book cover and is formed with a slot f to receive a terminal g fixed to the cover b. The electrolyte consists of an excitant mixed with gum tragacanth or other substance which swells on the addition of water. A sheet of blotting paper may be placed between the electrolyte carriers l and depolarizing blocks k. The constituent parts of the removable unit may be connected together by an agglutinant. The cover b of the battery is secured by a spring- clip h. The battery is activated by partially filling the casing with water, superfluous water being drawn off through an opening in the casing which also serves to limit the height to which the battery can be filled.
