Each electrode 2, Fig. 4, comprises a perforated metal frame 13 containing manganese dioxide powder and each electrode 3 comprises a copper plate coated with porous zinc, Fig. 5. The separators retain KOH electrolyte which may be thickened. Conducting strips 9, 11 connect the electrodes to terminals 10, 12. A toothed insulating block 15 maintains the upper ends of the stack components in spaced relationship.
