Electrodes; electrolytes.-A cell of the type which requires the addition of water to render it active is constructed so that the dry electrolyte is kept from effective contact with the carbon electrode during storage. After the addition of water relative movement between parts of the cell brings the electrolyte paste into contact with both electrodes. As shown in Fig. 1, the dry electrolyte b which may be of the kind described in Specifications 102,294 and 152,818 is placed' at the bottom of the zinc container a and forms a support for the carbon electrode c which is carried by the cover d. When the cell is required for use the cover with the carbon electrode is removed and water added to convert the electrolvte into jelly or paste. The cover and carbon electrode are then replaced and the cover pushed down to force the electrolyte upwards between the carbon and the zinc container. A greaseproof paper or other disc may be placed above the dry electrolyte which may also be insulated from the container.
