Abstract
An electrolytic cell with electrode plates of alternate polarity arranged horizontally in a pile and having >2 end plates and 2 intermediary plates, has a porous separator impregnated with electrolyte formed from several sheets separating the electrode plates. Each intermediary plate has a separator sheet folded in U-shape about it so that 2 adjacent plates are separated lby 2 separator sheets. The separator sheets have at leasts the same contact area as the electrode plates and can be made to overlap the separator sheet of the plate adjacent to it so that it is in contact with the adjacent electrode plate and not the one to which it is attached. >=1 of the end plates of the pile has a separator sheet folded round it so that one part of the sheet is external to the pile of electrodes and the other part is between the end plate and the adjacent plate. In electrolytic cells and in particular electrochemical generators, e.g. nickel-hydrogen accumulator. In existing cells during working the electrolyte tends to concentrate towards the bottom of the pile which tends to give a heterogeneous distribution of electrolyte between plates and an uneven distribution of current, but the electrolytic cell built in accordance with the inventin overcomes this.
