Abstract

872,638. Photographic flash lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Jan. 1, 1958 [Feb. 13, 1957], No. 29/58. Class 9(2). A photographic flash lamp comprising a sealed bulb containing a combustion supporting gas and a charge of combustible metallic material such as shredded foil is provided with ignition means comprising a pair of spaced electrodes, one at least being coated over the length within the bulb with electrically insulating material, at least part of which material is a priming composition. In addition the metallic material is in contact with the primer and with the other electrode to form an electrically conductive path for a spark discharge between the coated electrode and the metallic material upon application of a high voltage to the electrode. In Fig. 1 the bulb 1 is sealed at each reduced end 2 by metal contacts 3 to which electrodes 4 are attached by welding or brazing. The contacts may be a chrome iron alloy and the electrodes may be iron, copper, aluminium or nickel. One electrode has a porous coating 5 of an ignition composition such as zirconium or a mixture of zirconium with magnesium and an oxidiser such as potassium chlorate bonded by a binder such as nitrocellulose. The bulb has a filling of aluminium foil in an oxygen atmosphere. The lamp may be flashed, as in Specification 872,637, by inducing a voltage in a piezo-electric crystal 16, e.g. a barium-titanate crystal. The bulb may be of conventional shape, Fig. 3, in which case the electrodes 8 are spaced by a glass bead 9 and both are coated with the ignition composition 10 above the bead, while below the bead each is covered with electric insulation 12. The dielectric 12 may be a borate composition or an oxide of the electrode metal. Operation of the lamp may be synchronized with the movement of a camera shutter.
