Abstract
In a flash-bulb having current conductors spaced apart by an insulating member, the member has a recess therein having an ignition mass and the ends of the conductors therein and also there is provided means for keeping a mass of oxidizable metal away from the conductors so that the conductors ignite the ignition mass rather than the metal. In one embodiment the ignition mass 11 comprising zirconium, red phosphorus, potassium perchlorate and lanthanum tin cobaltite in nitrocellulose, is located in the recess 17 of the base of the lamp. The ridge 23 is provided to keep the oxidizable metal 3 away from the ignition mass. In an alternative embodiment Fig.2 (not shown) the ignition mass 11 is located in a recess in a bead (9) which is held inside the lamp envelope by the conductors. In this embodiment and another Fig.3 (not shown) a glass tube (19) may surround the conductors. In another embodiment Fig.5 (not shown) the distance through the ignition mass separating the ends of the conductors is smaller than the distance between the end of a conductor and the oxidizable metal thereby preventing premature ignition of the metal.
