Abstract

438,958. Thermally-actuated valves. HOWARTH, D. A., Down House, Downe, Farnborough, Kent. April 19, 1934, No. 11805. [Class 135] [See also Group XXXVII, XXV, and XXX] A device for actuating valves comprises a cylinder a open at one end and fitting over a fixed piston b to the upper end d of which is fixed a rubber bag g enclosing air electric heating element e mounted on a porous insulator f. A small quantity of a volatile liquid, such as water or carbon tetrachloride, is contained in the bag g and may when cool be absorbed in the insulator f so as to be in intimate contact with the heating element e. When current is passed through the heating element the liquid is evaporated causing the bag g to expand thus moving the cylinder a to operate the valve. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 14259/08, [Class 38].
