Abstract

Operation of the valve depends upon electrical heating by a resistive element (53) of a sealed chamber (39) fitted with a diaphragm wall (29) and containing a small amount of volatile liquid e.g. benzene. When heated the liquid vapourises and the increased pressure forces out the diaphragm and opens the valve (15) by means of a shaft (22). The opening of the valve is resisted by a set of spring washers (14) acting on the valve head and contained in another chamber (11). This chamber is also heated by windings (51,52) and the whole valve is enclosed in a thermally insulated (55) container (56,57,58). In operation, the windings of the second chamber are supplied with current to maintain the assembly at a temp. just short of the vapourisation temp. of the benzene.
