437,199. Making composite strips for bearings. ARNOLD, C., 11, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London. (Cleveland Graphite Bronze Co. ; 880, East 72nd Street, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A.) April 23, 1934, No. 12160. [Classes 83 (i) and 83 (ii)] Casting.-Flanges are formed on the edges of a backing strip, molten metal of relatively low melting-point is poured between the flanges and solidified by cooling, and the flanges are removed. Steel strip passes between rolls 11, 12 to form upturned flanges along the edges, then through a furnace 14 in which its temperature is raised approximately to that of the melting point of the coating metal which is allowed to flow on from a melting furnace 15, through a furnace 16 in which a non-oxidizing atmosphere is maintained and comprising a heating chamber 17 and a cooling chamber 18, beneath a water spray 20, and through rolls 19. In a modification strip 31 after flanging in rolls 32, 33, is heated by passing through a bath of molten brass &c. 37, and then passes beneath the pouring spout 38 for the coating metal and the cooling- spray 39 and between rolls 40. The strip, after removal of the flanges is rolled, drawn or otherwise sized, and is bent to the required form such as a cylindrical bearing.
